Where To Go In Philly – R&B After Dark

If you’re looking for where to spend your Friday, I have the perfect event for you! The powerful, versatile DJ, producer, and musician duo BLCKTEETH has collaborated with 2300 Arena in South Philly for another one of their R&B After Dark events, taking place at 7 pm. If you’ve made it to the last shows or have been meaning to, I recommend getting your $15 tickets now; there won’t be another one until April 27th! Going to be stuck at work at that time? No stress, you can go to Old City for the After Party at the Luna Lounge for more performances and even more DJ sets.

So what exactly is R&B After Dark? According to the boys, the event is meant to highlight the songstresses of Philadelphia if that doesn’t entice you enough. The monthly event highlights and celebrates the wonderful and beautiful talent of Black female R&B singers throughout the city while also aiming to showcase the artistry that is so abundant here in Philly. While the event is an amazing way to kick off your weekend with incredible performances, it’s a lot more than that. The dynamic duo often uses their stages to give marginalized artists opportunities to share their craft, and this situation is no different, hoping to positively shape the music community to provide Black female artists with more resources and platforms.

And if you haven’t gotten to familiarize yourself with BLCKTEETH, I highly suggest you do so. After spending just one evening with the two of them in the studio, I can tell you this: They have a lot of amazing plans with no intention of slowing down any time soon. The span of their talents, coupled with their aspirations of how they want to positively impact the city, is admirable, and I’m excited to watch them flourish.

The Blckteeth Group is made up of two artists by the names of Elijah Black and Justin Powis. Growing up with immigrant and interracial roots, they struggled to find representation, resources, communities, and opportunities for people of their backgrounds, especially in artistic settings. When they established their music group in 2020, they created it with the intention of combatting these very struggles by making a safe space for similar artists who may have faced similar issues solely because of where they’re from. Having organized over 120 events throughout the city, Elijah and Justin have made it their mission to give these artists a place to celebrate their talents. But they also do so in the studio, where they run sessions as producers and sound engineers. Furthermore, you can catch them spinning around Philadelphia, where they create live, multi-cultural, and multi-genre sets incorporating all originally produced music and live instrumentation. The duo prides themselves on originality and innovation in a saturated industry where it can be difficult to stand out. But by diligently staying true to who they are as a team, they have successfully done so.
